For some of us, subtle nuances of feeling are inaccessible: ‘behind a wall’.

Developed on residency at Domaine de Boisbuchet this work is a continuation of my interest in coded messages. Here I address the barriers
and limitations around overt expressions of emotion.

From a comprehensive (but not exhaustive) list of 840 'feeling' words (supplied by renowned psychologist Dr Jonice Webb), I translated each word into Morse Code and used the natural binary structure within knitting (the knit stitch and the purl stitch) to spell out each word.

 

The process of slow hand knitting (12 months in the making) allowed me to explore the language of emotion. Connecting fully to my own internal landscape, I acknowledged and recognised each feeling as I physically encoding it into textile.
